Whole 30: We are Breaking UP, Its not You its Me

So I completed The Whole 30 in February along with a second round of 21 Day Fix (first round results HERE) and I was pretty proud of my results!
Whole 30 & Shakeology (So lets call it "Half 30")


But as I did make clear, I was NOT going to adjust my life totally for Whole 30.  There were some deal breakers in my current lifestyle that have worked so well for me over the past 3 years of my health and fitness journey, like Shakeology.


Deal Breaker

From what I read in the book "we are all adults" and can make decisions about how to do just about any program. The program also suggests using a multivitamin, which I just won't do and is why I drink Shakeology daily instead.  No harm, no foul.  I made my adult decision.  

However recently, the author posted and she was pretty upset. Mostly because people were making modifications to her program and requiring Shakeology as part of a challenge group. While I have NEVER done this personally, and I did the program to try it for myself.   I respect she designed the program a certain way and does not want her brand to be damaged or confused.

I learned a lot doing this program and like any program I have done, I take what I learned and use it to educate myself and incorporate these teachings into my daily life.  I feel like I have kicked up my clean eating game, learned a lot of new recipes that are portion control compliant and that I can share with my challengers. 

No one puts Baby in the corner.

I'm going to keep kicking some clean eating tail, but I'm going to do it MY way, the way that works best for ME. I respect that approach with anyone I consult with and I'm really glad had a great experience that is going to help me be a better Coach and help my Challengers crush some serious cravings.

I LOVE what I learned but I'm so glad to have cocktails and pizza back in my life too- its all about moderation.  Thats really what works best for me! 80/20 living I'm a working mom and in real life, flexibility has been my friend for the past 36 months.  I'd say I have a good thing going!

Whole 30 Summary and Round 1 Results!


REAL TALK

So I will say that one big reason to do the Whole 30 is to reduce inflammation and take our clean eating to the next level.  I admittedly felt like I hit a plateau in my nutrition so I wanted to kick it up a notch and this sounded like a program that I needed.

Slaying the sugar dragon? Yes Please! Controlling Cravings!? YES YES YES!

MY RESULTS

So the physical results are one piece of this program but its NOT the only reason for this program at all.

Well for starters lets list out our non scale victories:

Fewer Blemishes
Glowing skin
Flatter stomach
Leaner appearance
Clothes fitting better
Less bloating
Regularity
More patience
Improved focus and mental clarity
No headaches
No more fatigue
Improved workout performance
Less anxious
Less stressed
NO sugar cravings (Literally!)

I have learned to read labels! (And shop for Deals #ShopRite)
I know which foods make me feel GREAT vs. Crappy
I know the difference between hunger and craving

My Results

In all I lost a total of 5 pounds and 5.75" total. That breaks down to 3.5 pounds of fat alone!! With 3 inches coming of my waist alone! (Yeah!)  You can see the difference here and let me tell you I can feel it!!


 A great visual for why I could lose 5 lbs and have it feel and look like so much more is below.  Body fat simply takes up more volume in the body than muscle does.  So what was so AMAZING about this program is that it is NOT calorie restrictive!! Nope! But it proves eat the right kinds of food and workout out and you can TORCH body fat!!

This is just 30 days- that really is a drop in the bucket people!! Imagine what incorporating what I learned over this past 30 days could do woven into my daily life!! Hello!! Plateau CRUSHED! I'm going to take a break and start trying to add a few things I took out of my nutrition over this past month back in and see where it leads.  Hummus, some rice, I'll have the occasional cocktail or desert. But I do not want to reverse all this good work.

Whole 30 Results Interview- Ron & Daria

His Results

Ron lost 12.5 lbs over all and 4.75" - 1.5" off his waist and another 1" off his hips.  He lost a total of 9.47 pounds of fat and 2.7 pounds of muscle.  

The trade off is clear in the pictures! Just the amount of fat loss around his organs alone is AWESOME.  That makes such a major difference in overall fitness and hear health.  A total WIN!

What we found amazing is how we didn't really feel deprived once we got over the first week and a half.  Once we STOPPED the focus on what we couldn't have and started realizing how much we could have that flipped the script!

Realizing what your cravings where and how they were impacted by all the things we were just not eating.  The faded away.  Their hold was not as tight and it just didn't matter as much.  If you held out for 10-15 minute those cravings, well they faded!

WHAT WILL WE DO NOW?

I feel like this is the the NEXT LEVEL of clean eating.  Ron and I really thought about weather we could have been successful in a program like this prior to learning more about clean eating.  The truth is, we think we might have been successful but missed the REAL point of this program.

The GOAL was not weight loss.  It was breaking cravings and reducing inflammation, trying a next level of clean eating.  If you go into this with the right mindset, you can do amazing things.

But what to do AFTER the 30 days? Thats the KEY to this puzzle.  You need to continue the journey- you need to refine your habits and give yourself a chance to branch out and learn more!

Whole 30 Week 4: We Made It!

RECIPES

DAILY SUMMARY

Day 28-30: 28 is as good as 30... right?! So at this stage of the game its really easy to say thats enough-- but honestly we were sooo  busy and guess what!? I GOT SICK! Ahhh yep, a really bad cold took me down so I was in bed for a couple days and not able to smell or taste a darn thing!

I guess in retrospect this was a good thing.  Except that I wasn't really prepared for Day 30 like I thought I would be.  I kind of at this point have been in autopilot mode.  So I had more anxiety about what do do about the "after" period than expected.

Days 29 & 30: Holy Moly, its almost over!! To top it off it was the Superbowl! Yep- we were SO close to the finish line and here we are having a Mini Supbowl party!  We fixed up some Whole 30 Approved Chicken Wings and Ranch Dressing

 Again, we were so busy and our program ended on a Tuesday- so we were in the grind of the week.  Kids, work, pets.... we didn't know what to do except keep going on Whlole 30!


Ron had some regular sugar in his coffee- I had a packet of Stevia in mine.  A few chocolate chips.  But really we were too busy with the week to go stuff ourselves with a burger.  Besides!! Whole 30 dinners are GOOOD!! We never felt deprived at dinner time so we were itching to "cheat"

My Treat

I still look forward to my Shakeology as one of my meals per day but I make sure to make it more meal like by adding Spinach, Almond Butter, Unsweetened Coconut, Cacao Nibs and Unsweetened Almond Milk. I look forward to it after my workouts.

I used it as one of my meals per day.  I occasionally used RX Bar's and my favorite was Chocolate Sea Salt.  But I tried to use fruit and nuts if I needed a second snack rather than a bar.  I never thought RX Bar's were that fantastic until I cut all the sugar out.

WORKOUTS

21 Day Fix going strong, I'll be transitioning over to 21 Day Fix Extreme next.  My energy is GREAT. I also use Energize pre-workout but I do notice I feel stronger and I'm using heavier weights.

This isn't a reduced calorie plan so I'm want to make my workouts count!

I didn't let up on my workouts and my results show!! My core leaned out and I have real amazing definition!! So that was a total, and unexpected WIN!

REAL TALK 4 THE LADIES

So for the ladies- another reason for the way this program is structured is for hormonal response.  Giving your body a break between meals etc..  I will tell you that I had my "lady time" this past week and it took me by total surprise.  Don't get me wrong, I was ANGRY, but I had none of the physical reactions I normally would.  No debilitating crams, no insane cravings, no headache! NOTHING.  That is NEW and fantastic.  That alone will keep me a Whole 30 believer!!

WEEK 4 SUMMARY

We took our pictures and measurements and I CAN NOT wait to share our results!! Eeeeek!!!

I still feel amazing and I sleep like I'm in a coma every night.  Honestly this 30 days FLEW, and once I got some religion with the "rules" we made it work.  I literally did NOT cheat in 30 days.  I didn't have Sugar either which is a HUGE accomplishment for me!

I have totally enjoyed being culinary McGuyver some nights!! "What can we make with a sweet potato and this ground beef??" and BOOM a masterpiece! Its really been fun and we have been creative!!

Buffalo Sauce and Grilled Wings

Buffalo Sauce

This is the sauce we use to pour over our grilled chicken wings.

Ingredients

1/2 C Coconut Oil
1/2 C Ghee or  Clarified Butter
1C Hot Sauce
2 Tbsp apple Cider Vinegar
1 Clove Garlic, Minced

Direction

In a small saucepan, gently melt the coconut oil and ghee over medium-low heat until completely liquefied.

Combine the hot sauce, vinegar, and garlic in a medium mixing bowl and whisk unitl thoroughly blended.  While whisking, drizzle in the melted coconut oil and ghee.  The sauce should have a smooth, consistent texture.

Store this sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.  (note the coconut oil and ghee will solidify in the cold, so pull it out of the fridge, let it come bak to room temperature before serving, and gently stir to rebelled.)

Chicken Wings

Ingredients

1 lb. chicken wings

Directions

Preheat the grill to medium high heat about 400.  Add a pound of wings to the grill and close the lid. Turn the wings every few minutes, cook until lightly charred and skin starts to bubble, 15 to 20 min.   Toss the wings with the buffalo sauce in a large bowl immediately after removing them from the grill and let them sit in the sauce for a few minutes before serving with a side of celery and carrots and Whole 30 approved Ranch Dressing.

You can also preheat the oven 375 and follow the same technique, have golden, crispy wings in about an hour.
